The Just Reporting Network (JRN) is a group of journalists, broadcasters, writers and filmmakers. We were established after growing collectively concerned by the media’s coverage of Israel’s assault on Gaza, an attack which has killed an unprecedented number of our colleagues. We believe in the fundamental journalistic principle of holding power to account and this underpins our commitment to improving coverage of the Israeli state and Palestine in the media.
It is clear that our media has collectively failed to accurately or fairly report the situation in Palestine. As part of the media, we intend to change that.
We are acutely aware of the culture of intimidation and censorship which exists in many of our newsrooms for those who challenge the editorial orthodoxy, particularly with relation to reporting on Palestine. We aim to provide a network for colleagues to cooperate and support each other as we strive to uphold journalistic best practice. As part of our activities, we will hold events and workshops on ethical reporting and work to build confidence in reporting based on principles of justice, accountability and equality.
We seek to amplify the journalism of our Palestinian colleagues both in the West Bank and Gaza who are working under the most difficult conditions imaginable. We will encourage cooperation between our newsrooms in Britain and journalists on the ground, and will work to highlight the horrific levels of unlawful detention and killings of our colleagues by the Israeli state.
